HISD student to be honored as U.S. Presidential Scholar in Washington, D.C.

A Houston Independent School District high school student hopes to have the opportunity to meet President Barack Obama this summer after being selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar.

Liana Wang of Bellaire High School is among only 160 high school seniors from across the country to be recognized in the 52nd class of U.S. Presidential Scholars for her leadership, academic accomplishments, and service to the community. Learn more about the honor, and Liana, here.

  • The four HISD students who aced the ACT exam. The students – Edward “Ned” Swart of Lamar High School and Ishaan Chatterjee, Amrith Lotlikar, and Andrei Savitski of Carnegie Vanguard High School – were recently notified that they earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36. Five HISD students win coveted Gates Millennium Scholarship

Five Houston Independent School District students are among more than 1,000 high school seniors from across the country to be selected this week to the final class of the Gates Millennium Scholars program.

The students — Nofisat Babajide and Esther Brown from Bellaire High School, Janeth Rodriguez from Carnegie Vanguard High School, Leslie Benavides from Eastwood Academy, and Sheighlah McManus from Jane Long Academy— will be awarded a scholarship that can be used to pursue a degree at accredited colleges or universities of their choosing.   • Student athletes at Deady and Stevenson middle schools, for receiving donations in excess of $53,000 from the JJ Watt Foundation. Read more about the donations, and JJ Watts’ inspiring speech here.
  • Madison HS, whose rocket club team, “Sensation Station,” has qualified to compete in the national finals of the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), which will be held outside of Washington, D.C. See photos of the team building their second rocket here.
  • Carnegie Vanguard HS senior Cole Bennette, who won First Place in the Society for the Performing Arts’ Annual Wells Fargo Art Contest.  He will receive a check for $750.00.  See his winning artwork on the SPA website.
  • Jaelyn Walls, a junior at Carnegie Vanguard HS, for winning Princeton University’s Ten-Minute Play Contest. To read more about the competition, click here.
  • Four students from Carnegie Vanguard HS and Lamar HS were recently notified that they earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36. On average, less than 0.1 percent of students who take the ACT nationally earns the top score. Read more here.
  • Thao T. Lam of DeBakey High School for Health Professions, who received a $2,500 corporate-sponsored scholarship from The Novartis Group, a leading manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and health-care products. Lam plans to attend the University of Miami and later work in pediatrics. Click here to learn more.

Student chefs take top honors at Houston’s Cooking Up Change competition

Students from four HISD high schools -Barbara Jordan High School, Davis High School, Harper Alternative School and last year’s champions, Westside High School – chopped, sliced, sautéed and baked for top culinary honors at this year’s Houston Cooking Up Change competition.   • Barbara Jordan High School, Energized for STEM Academy, North Houston Early College High School, High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, Eastwood Academy, Young Women’s College Preparatory, Reagan High School 11th-grade students for winning the School Day Incentive program.   • Sanchez Elementary School dance students, who captured five awards at the ACADEZ (Academia de la Danza Amalia Hernandez) National Folklorico/Contemporary Dance Competition held April 9 in San Antonio. See photos of the dance troupe here.
  • High School for Performing and Visual Arts, which was selected as one of only two schools nationwide selected by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to participate in a national “Peer-to-Peer Education” tour. Read more about it here.
  • Five students from the Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy and four students from the Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men, known collectively as Roses and Knights, as they head to the 2016 VEX Worlds Robotics championship after qualifying for the event by winning the National Society of Black Engineers’ VEX Competition in Boston. Five HISD students win additional honors through Scholastic Art & Writing

Students from four different HISD schools – Pin Oak MS, HS for Performing and Visual Arts, T.H. Rogers, and Carnegie Vanguard – have been recognized as national winners in the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing contests, and a fifth student has received an additional award at the regional level.   • HISD Nutrition Services, for being recognized by the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Perfect Peach Award for offering locally sourced products such as summer squash, apples, and watermelon on school menus. Read more about the award here.
  • The 55 students from Bellaire, Carnegie Vanguard, Lamar, and Lee high schools, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Eastwood Academy, and the High School for the Performing & Visual Arts, for being named National Merit finalists. Learn what’s next for the students as they advance here.

HISD wins third national Magna Award for Literacy By 3 efforts

The Houston ISD received the first-place Magna Award for its Literacy By 3 program, which strives to have all students reading and writing fluently by the end of third grade. HISD is one of five first-place winners in the over 20,000 enrollment category. Read more about the honor here.

  • A dozen students from Davis HS, who were both participants in the University Interscholastic League’s very first State Mariachi Festival and the only school from HISD to be representing the district.
