How to request use of a Youtube video for instructional purposes

YouTube_logoThe district’s web filtering solution configured on student-issued PowerUp devices blocks student access both at school, and at home, to a number of social media, gaming, streaming video, and other websites which are denied by district policy. All other access to the Internet on the district network follows the same policies for web filtering. Teachers needing use of blocked websites for instructional purposes can request a review of the website by following the below instructions.

YouTube Videos

Per district policy, the YouTube “educationcategory” (www.youtube.com/education) is allowed for students while on the HISD network. All of YouTube is blocked for studentissued PowerUp devices while off the HISD network. Teachers have access to the full YouTube site. Teachers wanting a specific YouTube video unblocked for instructional purposes can request a review of the video for access to be granted to students.Note: This will only allow access for the student while on the HISD network and not with the PowerUp device off network.

To request review of a blocked site, please send the request, along with the details listed below, either by email to servicedesk@houstonisd.org, or enter your own ticket at https://servicedesk.houstonisd.org.

  • List the website URL or YouTube Video URL.
  • What type of user is attempting to access this website? Teacher? Student? Both?
  • What type of workstation is being utilized? Mac or Windows?
  • What browser is the website being attempted on? IE, Chrome, Safari, or all?
  • Go to the Internet Explorer address bar and enter myproxy.com, then include a screen shot of that message as well.
  • Please provide an attachment of the error message or “access denied” message included within the email.
  • Please provide justification as to why the site should be unblocked to students.

Please allow five business days for the resource to be reviewed and unblocked, or for a response as to why the request was denied.
