HISD Nutrition Services employees were all-smiles this week as more than 1,500 team members took gathered at Wheatley High School for the department’s first annual Employee Appreciation Celebration.

Attendees enjoyed dancing, volleyball, games and good food as they reveled in the praise of Nutrition Services Officer Betti Wiggins, who thanked them for their hard work, dedication, and service to students.

“Thank you for all you do,” Wiggins said. “Nothing we do would be possible without all of you serving as one. I love you all, and I am thankful for you all embracing me.”

Wiggins told the group they had set record numbers for the year — including serving 41 million meals, which averages out to 280,000 meals per day.

The team also was lauded for their work in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, as they ensured nutritious food was available to students following the storm.

“It is so great to see all of us in one place together,” Warehouse Team Lead John Whiting said. “I can see things are changing for the better. We needed this.”

Nutrition Services produces scratch-based meals every day for HISD’s 215,000 students in 287 schools. The department also serves 20 million breakfast meals annually, making it the largest breakfast classroom program in the country.
