More than 100 student athletes from football, basketball, baseball, track and field, swimming, and wrestling, are at HISD’s Delmar Field House today to make their college and university choices official. Click here to see who’s going where.
Students, parents and school administrators said they were incredibly proud of the athletes who attended HISD’s National Signing Day Ceremony. Former NFL Player Antonio Armstrong reminded students that they are part of the small fraction of students who get to play college sports.
“You don’t know how special you are,” he said. “Someone looked at you on that floor and said ‘I want that kid on my team.’”
HISD Superintendent Terry Grier told students to take care of themselves and focus on their educations.
Lamar softball player Samantha Charles said she enjoyed the ceremony. She’s attending University of Central Florida next year.
“I fell in love with the campus when I visited it,” she said. “The team was so welcoming.”
Westside High School wide receiver Deante Gray will attend TCU in the fall. He said he was excited about his future.
“I feel blessed,” he said. “The campus is so nice, and the coaches were really upfront and honest. They took me in as one of their own.”
Deante’s mom, Karen Gray, said she couldn’t be more proud.
“We are very excited,” she said. “We pray that he has a great first year.”
