Reagan High School Team Wins UIL State Mathematics Championship

Reagan Senior also placed first in individual state competition

A mathematics team from HISD’s Reagan High School was declared the UIL State Mathematics Champion at the recent UIL State Meet.  Reagan team member Dante Vela also placed first in the individual state competition.

The mathematics competition is one of the most competitive contests at the UIL State Academic Meet, drawing students from across Texas.

The Reagan team, composed of five seniors, qualified for the state championship after advancing from UIL district and regional meets.  The team members have all been competing in UIL Academics for a combined total of 12 years.

“Participating in UIL Academics gave me the confidence and motivation to apply to better schools,” said Vela, who will be attending Stanford University next fall.  “Plus, the experience I gained through UIL Academics gave me a competitive advantage over other students that applied for admission.”

Team members include Jose Herrera, Argenis Uresti, John Delgado, Giovanni Gama and Dante Vela.  Reagan also advanced their calculator applications team to the state championship.

The state title comes on the heels of the recent announcement by the Texas research and advocacy group Children at Risk that Reagan is best comprehensive urban high school in the eight-county Houston region.
