Wheatley Takes HISD Tournament Crown

After three days of play last week, Wheatley’s varsity dominated a field of 29 teams to win the 30th Annual HISD Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament.

Wheatley High School’s squad was crowned champion in the 30th Annual HISD Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament, and Wheatley’s Arie Taylor was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

HISD teams notched three out of the top four places in the three-day tournament last week, with 29 teams in all competing. Westside High School took third, with Yates coming in fourth. Cy-Lake High School from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD notched the second-place spot.

HISD’s girl hoopsters also dominated the all-tournament team, nabbing 8 of the 11 slots. In addition to Taylor’s MVP honor, Wheatley’s Michelle Crosby, Eryka Sydney, and Jordance Wilson were named all-tourney, along with Sentreal Gregory and Tenea Thomas of Westside HS, Andrea Moore of Yates, and Joi Simmons of North Forest.

Also making the team were three Cy-Lakes players — Kendia Houston, Crystalyn Jordan, and Kelsey Gruthie.
