HISD students to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday through nutrition and reading

Food Services, The Rice School pairing up for day of books, Dr. Seuss-themed menu items

Students across the Houston Independent School District will celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss on Monday, March 3, in coordination with Read Across America Day.

To celebrate both occasions, HISD Food Services is collaborating with The Rice School/La Escuela Rice for a day of healthy eating and reading. The celebration will kick off at 10 a.m. at The Rice School La Escuela Rice.

The school, located at 7550 Seuss Drive Houston, TX 77025, will celebrate the day with a variety of activities including inviting special guests to read to students and encouraging students to dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. The Spanish magnet school will also read books in Spanish.

“We are excited to partner with Food Services to continue our annual tradition of recognizing Dr. Seuss’ birthday,” said The Rice School Principal Kimberly Hobbs. Dressed in their personally designed hats, kindergarten to fifth-grade students will participate in a parade from their classroom to the cafeteria for lunch service. Those who eat a complete lunch will have a chance to win a free Dr. Seuss hat.

Across the district, school cafeterias will be serving Dr. Seuss-themed menu items, such as Cat in the Hat Flap-tastic Pancakes for breakfast and Lorax Broccoli Trees during lunch service.

“HISD Food Services encourages students to practice healthy habits that boost their brain power, like eating nutritious foods and consistent reading,” said Audene Chung, Senior Administrator of HISD Food Services.
