HISD, Neil Bush encourage Houstonians to give back by reading to students

Community asked to spend at least 30 minutes a week reading to a child

HISD and the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation encouraged Houstonians to volunteer for the Read Houston Read literacy program in honor of ‘Giving Tuesday’ — a day specifically established to celebrate generosity and give back.

Read Houston Read is part of HISD’s Literacy by 3 movement, which calls for every child to be reading on grade level by the time they leave the third grade. The foundation held a Read Houston Read Volunteer Recruitment Breakfast on Dec. 2 at Memorial Elementary School to share the benefits of reading to children.

Close to 90 HISD employees recently registered for training for Read Houston Read, which gives volunteers a chance to spend up to 30 to 60 minutes each week reading to a child who might otherwise never have an adult read to them. Studies show that reading aloud to children greatly increases their vocabulary and cognitive skills. Volunteers can sign up at www.readhoustonread.com.
