Free SAT prep course now being offered by Khan Academy

Partnership with College Board to help students prepare for redesigned SAT

The College Board and Khan Academy have teamed up to provide free Scholarship Aptitude Test (SAT) preparation for all students beginning this month.

The SAT is a globally recognized college admission exam that demonstrates a student’s knowledge of reading, writing, and math. Most students take the SAT during their junior or senior year of high school, and many colleges use the test to make admission decisions.

HISD also offers a free online SAT coaching course for grades 9 through 11 called “PREP ME,” which is available here.

The official practice for the redesigned SAT is available on Khan Academy’s website at KhanAcademy.org and is open to all students at no cost. Interactive practice tools on the Khan Academy website are designed to help level the playing field for all students interested in taking the SAT and preparing for college-level courses.

Khan’s online SAT practice tools include diagnostic quizzes, four full-length practice tests written by the College Board, thousands of interactive practice questions, and personalized practice recommendations. In addition, students will receive instant feedback on their answers so that they can track their progress.

The College Board is in the process of redesigning the SAT to be more focused and useful. In the new SAT, which will be offered for the first time in March 2016, the essay is now separate and optional. Aside from the essay, students will receive two scores, one combined score for reading and writing, and another for math. A second major change is that students will be scored on correct answers only, with no deduction for incorrect answers.

There is also a preliminary version of the SAT called the PSAT/NMSQT, usually taken by juniors or sophomores. Not only is it good practice for the SAT, but it puts students in the running for National Merit Scholarships. The first redesigned PSAT will be offered in October 2015.

Founded in 2008, the Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with a team of more than 60 full-time staff members that provides free online materials and resources to support personalized education for learners of all ages.
