Make Read Houston Read one of your New Year’s resolutions

It’s the time of the year for making New Year’s resolutions. With so many options for change, why not make one resolution this year that’s easy to stick to: Read to a child through the Read Houston Read program.

All you have to do is commit one hour each week to sit with an HISD first-grader and a book. After you sign up online at www.connect4literacy.org/readhoustonread, you can choose to read in person at a participating school or online. Depending on which method you choose, you will be trained to:

• Share an adventure by reading to a child
• Participate in fun activities that relate directly to the reading material
• Listen to a child read and encourage them

“Mentoring with students through Read Houston Read is such an easy New Year’s Resolution to keep,” said Curriculum Specialist Carley Colton. “You can either read 30 minutes to one student by mentoring online or an hour to two students by mentoring in person.  The experience of building a relationship with another reader will not only change a student’s life, it will change yours as well. ”

Make 2016 meaningful and memorable for both you and a young reader. Use the New Year to change a life with Read Houston Read.
