Back-to-school events and resources for parents 

Getting ready for the first day of school? There are a number of events and resources available to ensure children are ready for the new school year:

HISD Homeless Education Office Back-to-School Extravaganza

Free backpacks, school supplies, shoes, health screenings, and immunization for low-income HISD families, not just the homeless. Students must bring their shot records to get free immunizations. The Houston Food Bank will distribute fresh produce to families. Noon to 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Bethel’s Empowerment Center, 12660 Sandpiper Dr., Houston 77035. 

Third Annual Back-2-School Haircut Charity Event with HISD Trustee Wanda Adams

Free school uniforms, backpacks, haircuts, food, and other giveaways from sponsors Kut-N-Zone Barber, Academy, H-E-B, United Healthcare, and much more. 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, at Kut-N-Zone Barber, 2919 Westridge Rd., Houston 77054.

Reliant Backpack Donation Giveaway

Reliant is donating 4,000 school-supply packs to 41 HISD schools to help families get ready for school. The packs will be jammed with notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, crayons, and more for students in all grades. 1:30-2:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, at Fonwood Early Childhood Center, 10719 Seneca St., Houston 77016.

SECHS Back-2-School Backpack Giveaway

South Early College High School students and their families are invited to the first annual Back-2-School Backpack Giveaway, where each child will receive a clear backpack, school supplies, hygiene items, a free health screening, and information about the new school-based health center opening in September. Free school uniforms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, at 1930 Airport Blvd., Houston 77045. Registration required.

Frost Elementary Back-to-School Event

Frost students and their families can receive free haircuts donated by O.G. Barber Game and free backpacks loaded with supplies donated by Pearland Costco and North Home Healthcare. Noon-3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18, at 5002 Almeda-Genoa Rd., Houston 77048.

Whole Foods Back to School Bash

Back to School Bash and Book Drive Kickoff by Whole Foods Market noon–3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, at all Whole Foods stores. More information and registration here.
