It was a science experiment brought to life when science lab teacher Jennifer Howell was surprised by Chief Academic Officer Noelia Longoria as the Sterling McCall VIP Services Teacher of the Month for November on Wednesday.

Howell’s fourth-grade students were getting a lesson on the types of batteries used in keyless remotes, specifically for push-start cars, when they learned their teacher’s recognition came with a special gift—a 2019 Acura TLX, courtesy of Sterling McCall Acura.

“This has been an overwhelming experience, and I’m indebted to the district for the recognition,” Howell said. “Every day, I’m driven to create enriching lessons that will push all 800 of my students.”

Having taught at Longfellow Elementary School for the last five years, Howell has made a lasting impression on her peers and students. A true master of science TEKS, when she isn’t peer-sharing lesson plans, she can be found leading Longfellow’s lighthouse team promoting the “Leader in Me” program.

“We are extremely proud to have Jennifer recognized today for the tremendous impact she has made on our campus,” Principal Katherine Keafer said. “She is one of our most dedicated teachers who continues to go over and beyond for her faculty and students.”

Howell also played an instrumental role in helping Longfellow receive a butterfly garden and chicken coop, as well as planning the campus’ family STEM night.

As part of the Teacher of the Month program, HISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan will surprise a teacher along with a rep from Sterling McCall VIP Services. Each month, the teacher will be presented with an award, a gift basket of promotional items, a $150 gift card, and a luxury loaner vehicle.

Each of the seven HISD Area Superintendents will be responsible for selecting a teacher from their region to be honored from October 2018 to May 2019.  Principals who would like to nominate a teacher on their campus should contact their school support officer or area superintendent directly.
