New employee educational learning center to open in North Forest

The Houston Independent School District is relocating its professional development operations to provide impactful and engaging training opportunities that meet the wide-ranging needs of employees across the district.

The center will occupy the original North Forest High School building, located in northeast Houston. The building was vacated in January when North Forest students and staff moved into their new facility across Mesa Drive.

The new learning center, which is tentatively scheduled to open for training in late winter, will provide a comfortable, welcoming, and professional training environment with updated technology designed to enhance the professional development offerings available across the district.

HISD celebrates 2018 Educators of the Year

The Houston Independent School District on Friday paid tribute to the district’s top elementary and secondary teachers of the year during the seventh annual Educators of the Year banquet, which honors exceptional teachers and principals.

Darron Smith, a fifth-grade ESL teacher at Bonner Elementary School, was named HISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, while Alejandra Ortega, an eighth-grade math teacher at McReynolds Middle School, was named HISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. Continue reading

HISD Board of Education approves recommendation for external performance audit

The Houston Independent School District Board of Education on Thursday unanimously approved a recommendation from the Audit Committee calling for an external performance audit.

The Audit Committee recommended an external performance audit be conducted in order to ensure HISD is utilizing scarce resources as efficiently and effectively as possible to inform decision-making and budgeting by the board and administration for the 2019-2020 school year and beyond, and to build public trust by exhibiting good stewardship of public dollars.
