HISD grad receives $40K on Good Morning America

The CollegeBoard announced that it is investing $25 million over the next five years for its new Opportunity Scholarship. And to kickstart that commitment, Booker T. Washington High School 2017 graduate Matthew Blue has been awarded a $40,000 scholarship to continue his studies at Langston University in Oklahoma.

Blue is one of the very first recipients of CollegeBoard’s Opportunity Scholarship, and the award was unveiled live on Good Morning America. Blue was a pioneer in making Official SAT Practice at Khan Academy a household name in HISD. Using Khan Academy, he increased his SAT score by more than 200 points, expanding both his scholarship and college options. Continue reading

HISD announces school winners of ‘We Khan Do It’ Challenge  

To boost college readiness across the district, HISD in mid-January challenged the district’s schools to compete for the most students using Khan Academy before the SAT test – and the results are in.

The three high schools with the most usage will receive financial support to enhance their college centers and/or support for college visits. Because college readiness starts early, elementary and middle schools were also part of the challenge. As part of a photo competition challenge, elementary and middle schools also arranged college visits for students and then tweeted pictures of those events.  Continue reading

HISD offers ‘We Khan Do It’ challenge to all district schools 

Thousands of HISD high school students will take the SAT during the school day on April 5, and now there is one more reason for them to start preparing early for the important college-admission test.

HISD is kicking off a challenge among the district’s schools that will reward them for having the most students using Khan Academy to prepare for the SAT.

HISD students raise SAT/PSAT scores by hundreds of points using free test prep from Khan Academy

Two Booker T. Washington students have become national ambassadors for successful SAT/PSAT prep by  increasing their scores a combined 670 points, thanks to free practice tools available to every HISD student through Khan Academy.

In mid-October, the CollegeBoard flew Valencia Grayson and Matthew Blue to the Council of the Great City Schools fall conference in Miami, where they were honored for their success with the Khan SAT prep. HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza also attended the conference, where HISD was recognized for actively promoting the Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy.
