Nimmi Thomas named new principal of Park Place Elementary School

Nimmi Thomas has been selected as the new principal of Park Place Elementary School. Thomas started her career 20 years ago as a paraprofessional in HISD. She then became a Special Education and ESL teacher at Lamar High School. She has held the position of assistant principal at Lanier Middle School and most recently at Baylor College of Medicine-Biotech Academy at Rusk. Thomas was selected as the Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year for the East Area for 2020. She earned her master’s in Social Work from Bombay University, India, and her MBA-E from The Cameron School of Business at University of St Thomas.

HISD student wins grand prize worth $25K in Microsoft’s Bing Summer Story Challenge

Third-grader Shaun Toliao will be taking his family to Hawaii, just for writing a story about what he did last summer. The Park Place Elementary School student was the grand prize winner of the Bing in the Classroom Summer Story Challenge, a digital storytelling contest sponsored by Microsoft.

He also won a Surface Pro Tablet and other tech prizes, as well as the opportunity to take classes in digital literacy while in Hawaii. Toliao’s prize is worth a grand total of $25,000. Continue reading

Three Students’ Artwork Selected for HISD’s 2013 Holiday Greeting Card

This year the Houston Independent School District honored the artistic talent of its students by selecting three finalists’ artwork for the 2013 HISD Holiday Greeting Card.  The winners were Adrian Pizarro from Park Place Elementary School, Amy Vaughan from Johnston Middle School and Tam Ngo from DeBakey High School for Health Professions.

“This is one of my favorite events of the year as we have the opportunity to recognize the amazing talent of our students,” HISD Chief of Business and Community Relations Dr. Michele Pola said.  “We are very grateful for all the art teachers who support their students in their creativity.”
