Wharton Dual Language Academy offers ‘vast opportunities’ for HISD students

As Superintendent Millard House arrived at Wharton Dual Language Academy, he walked toward two young students tasked with welcoming the chief educator and holding open glass double doors leading to the main hallway.

Clad in masks and blue school shirts, the second graders peered quizzically at their special visitor.

“Are you guys doing OK?” House asked, as he approached the pair and asked about their names and grades. “You know, it makes my day when I get to see you all.”

Former HISD athlete takes bronze in Tokyo

Rounding the corner of the first lap of her race at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on Tuesday evening, Raevyn Rogers was in last place. But back in Houston, her mother knew the first-time Olympian just hadn’t made her big move yet.

“She went through the first lap, and I was still sitting down,” Rhonda Rogers said. “When she started making a move, I stood up. I was talking to the TV like she was right there with me.”

That mother’s intuition proved to be spot on—just a few moments later, the 24-year-old Houstonian pulled ahead and finished third, bringing home the bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics in the Women’s 800-meter race.

Students, faculty, and staff at the PK-8 school were eager to return to their new and improved home campus after spending the last year and a half housed in temporary buildings a few blocks away during construction.

“The new building has infused new life into the school and community,” Principal Jennifer Day said. “We moved from a very old building and temp buildings into a new state-of-the-art everything – technology, a maker space, science labs, and more. There are so many more learning opportunities for our students, and we are looking forward to adding more students and more programs.” Continue reading
