Ask HISD: Can my home-schooled student play in your band?

2013 September 20
by HISD Communications

HISD has received a number of questions recently from the parents of home-schooled children who want to know if their kids can participate in extra-curricular activities (such as band or athletics competitions) at HISD schools.

Is this even possible?

It is not. According to both Texas Education Agency (TEA) and University Interscholastic League (UIL) policies, unless a child is enrolled at an HISD campus and meets the eligibility requirements for participation, he or she is not allowed to take part in that school’s extracurricular activities or campus electives.

For more information on UIL and TEA policies, please visit their respective websites or see this Side-by-Side comparison (.pdf).
