Clockwise from left are: Kristian Lozoya, Charles Vale, Coach Robert Myers, Thuy Nguyen, and McReynolds MS student Bryant Juarez, holding the first-place team trophy.

Three students from two HISD schools collected the top three prizes in a recent online chess competition.

Chávez High School students Khristian Lozoya and Thuy Nguyen took first and second place (respectively) in the Chess Academy’s Inter-squad Online Chess Tournament on Oct. 11, while Charles Vale from HISD’s McReynolds Middle School came in third.

Students from 14 different schools on three different continents (Asia, Africa, and America) participated in the competition.

Congratulations also go out this week to:

  • Thirty high-performing students from Marshall Middle School, who were treated to a tour of Rice University, a barbecue tailgate, and tickets to the game between the Kansas Jayhawks and Rice Owls last month, courtesy of the Rice 100 program and The Moran Norris Foundation.
