Ever had a frozen mango/strawberry/pomegranate fruit cup in a school cafeteria? How about a pizza made with sweet potato flour crust? A “French fry” made out of baked broccoli? Dragon fruit juice?

If not, now’s your chance to make it happen. HISD will be hosting its very first Nutrition Innovation Food Show from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 24, at the Sheraton Houston Brookhollow Hotel (3000 North Loop West, 77092), and all students and their families are invited to attend.

More than 40 vendors will be on hand offering samples of all of these items and hundreds more—including sauces based on Tandoori spice mixes from India and “jerk” seasonings from Jamaica—as well as a number of gluten-free options. All of the products are designed to help HISD Food Services lead the nation in providing nutritionally sound and satisfactory meals to its students.

If you would like to help determine what will be offered in the district’s cafeterias, make plans now to attend this exciting event. Participants will be asked to fill out an evaluation form, and their feedback will be used to design menus for the 2014–2015 school year.
