First-grade teacher at Herrera ES wins SMART Collaborative Classroom
Carrie Curtis, a first-grade teacher at Herrera Elementary School, is taking her students to the next century of education with a roomful of new technology.
Curtis was one of only 20 teachers from across the nation to be selected for the SMART Collaborative Classroom project. She worked with SMART representatives to design a classroom that will change the way her students learn, and the company provided four, widescreen, dual-touch SMART boards, four SMART projectors, a set of SMART response clickers, one SMART document camera with 3-D technology, one SMART amplifying system, SMART tables, and SMART slates, transforming her classroom into a 21st century learning space that will facilitate class participation and student-centered instruction.
Michael Judge, an eighth-grade teacher at Thomas Middle School, was also named a SMART Collaborative Classroom recipient.
Other accolades:
Herod Elementary School honored the individuals who keep its hallways sparkling and its students safe at its second annual Crossing Guard and Custodial Staff Appreciation Day on Feb. 8, 2013.
Each crossing guard and member of the custodial staff received a card and a small gift from the Herod PTO, and messages of appreciation were posted in the halls and signed by students, parents and teachers. A selection of coffee and donuts was also provided for the honorees in the teachers’ break room.
Appreciation Day was launched in 2012 at the request of Herod fourth-grader Rory Schoech, whose mother pitched the idea to the PTO.
