Area manager still ‘giving her best’ to HISD after 35 years
When Barbara Mora first came to HISD in the summer of 1979, she was a divorced mother of two young children who was “looking for a miracle,” but a tip from a neighbor helped her embark on what would eventually be a 35-year (and counting!) career with the district.
“I am not sure I really thought about how long I was going to work for HISD,” said Mora. “I always just had the attitude of doing the best I could with the resources we were given.”
Mora started out as a scheduler when she first came aboard, but has risen steadily over the years to her current position of custodial area manager in Construction & Facility Services.
“My favorite part of the job has been the ability to work in an ever-changing environment,” she said. “We have a group of individuals who want to provide a clean, safe learning environment for all children, and the relationships I have built with them goes without saying; this truly is ‘Team HISD.’”

Barbara Mora is the real deal. I met Barbara and her husband at church many years ago but only realized she was an HISD employee when I encountered her on the job. Barbara goes out of her way to ensure good communication and an understanding of expectations. If one of her schools has an issue, she’s right there to meet and find a solution. She is the best of the best! HISD should be very proud to have her on The Team. We are certainly blessed to have her! I only hope she is in the position to mentor up-and-comings so the District is left in good hands when she eventually enjoys retirement. Congratulations, Barbara, on 35 years with the District.
