Jones Futures Academy ‘Flipping Out’ with the HUB
Students at Jones High School won’t be receiving their PowerUp laptops until early January, but that’s not stopping teachers from using the HUB, HISD’s new online teaching and learning platform, with their students. Advanced Placement World and U.S. History teacher Amber Howard has been using a laptop cart in the classroom to get her students more familiar with the HUB, and to “flip her classroom.” In a flipped classroom, instruction is delivered online outside of class, and homework is completed during class time.
“Now I am delivering my lectures via the HUB using PowerPoints and videos that my students can watch at home,” said Howard. “Then we do the assignments and discussions during class. I like the HUB because it is faster and more organized.”
Jones is one of 48 pilot schools using the HUB this school year to personalize instruction for students. During the 2015-2016 school year all schools and students will have access to the online platform.
Students in Howard’s class are enjoying the HUB and the increased use of technology in her classroom and at home to review assignments, work on projects, and collaborate with their peers.
“I like the HUB because it’s faster and more organized,” said Jones student Chloe Jenkins, Her classmates agree. Michael Tyler appreciates that he can take notes in the HUB and can turn in assignments. “I am excited to get my own laptop in a month,” he said.
