District’s interoperability in the spotlight
What HISD is doing to ensure data systems work together
When HISD began to develop its implementation plan for the HUB, the district’s K–12 learning management system, Director of IT Educational Technology Beatriz Arnillas and her team became focused on one word: interoperability. Interoperability enables different data systems to work together and allows students and teachers to access digital resources from a single platform without additional logins.
Arnillas and her team’s response to the interoperability challenge was for HISD to join the IMS Global Consortium in 2014 and to adopt the group’s “Learning Tools Interoperability Standards.” IMS Global is a nonprofit organization that strives to enable the growth and impact of learning technology in education worldwide.
“Through their interoperability standards, we have eliminated multiple login/passwords and were able to open high-quality digital content provided by multiple vendors in one platform: the HUB,” said Arnillas.
Many other school districts across the nation are now following HISD’s lead by adopting the interoperability standards and are looking to HISD for guidance as they navigate the challenges of a digital transformation.
