Surprise! HISD named education ‘Super-Hero’ by Learning Counsel
HISD was recently surprised with the Super-Hero Award from The Learning Counsel, a research institute and media hub focused on the K-12 transition to digital curriculum.
HISD Senior Information Technology Manager Beatriz Arnillas accepted the award on behalf of Team HISD at the counsel’s conference Nov. 15.
“This was a total surprise,” said Arnillas, who was presenting on behalf of HISD at The Learning Counsel’s annual gathering of school superintendents, tech and instructional administrators, curriculum specialists, and thousands of digital curriculum publishers. “This award goes to all the members of Team HISD who have been working cross-functionally for the past several years to digitally transform teaching and learning at HISD.”

The Learning Counsel presents one Super-Hero Award per year for nationally significant achievements in the transition to digital curriculum and technology. The award signifies the special long-term management of a program to arrive at new points of teaching and learning. In HISD’s case, the award recognized the launch of the district’s PowerUp one-to-one student laptop initiative and the HUB, HISD’s online K-12 learning management system for teachers and students.
LeiLani Cauthen, CEO and Publisher at The Learning Counsel, presented the award to HISD.
“The people at HISD, and I have met many of them, the IT and curriculum leaders, deliver on real change,” Cauthen said. “For that, we want to give them the Super-Hero Award. They lead the nation in positive forward motion, in action that matters.”
