HISD celebrates Bus Driver Appreciation Week with breakfast for drivers
This week, Transportation Services joined with Nutrition Services — both under the umbrella of HISD’s Business Operations division — to host Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfasts at each of the district’s four bus terminals.
“This is very nice. It makes us feel more appreciated for what we do,” driver Melody Gray said, taking a moment to grab breakfast at the Barnett Terminal after completing her morning route.
Located in southeast Houston, the Barnett terminal was the first to host the appreciation breakfast. Similar events will be held throughout the week at Central, Butler and Northwest terminals.
The drivers at the Barnett terminal got the chance to talk with HISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan, who stopped by on Monday to show her support and thank transportation employees for their hard work.
“This is just a way to say thank you,” Lathan said. “I know the first couple of weeks have been some rough weeks. You had to take some extra routes and had to do a lot. I want to just say thank you and I appreciate you. Thank you for what you do.”
Transportation Services General Manager Tim Brown said the observance is particularly important this year, especially after Transportation’s rough start to the 2018-2019 school year.
“Our drivers come in each and every day not only doing their jobs, but assisting on other routes,” Brown said. “We wanted to let them know early in the year how much we appreciate all that they do.”
According to driver John Patterson, who works out of the Barnett terminal, a little thanks goes a long way.
“It feels good to be appreciated,” Patterson said. “We don’t often get it a lot. Whenever we do, it’s well appreciated by us.”
