Loan forgiveness programs available to critical-shortage-area teachers

by HISD Communications

If you’re a teacher who still has outstanding balances on student loans, you may qualify to have those partially forgiven, deferred, or even cancelled all together if you teach a subject deemed a critical shortage area by the Texas Education Agency.

Options depend on what type of loan you have received (e.g. Stafford, Perkins, etc.) and other eligibility requirements.

For complete details, please visit the TEA or U.S. Dept. of Education websites.

I just finished my Masters degree at St. Thomas University. What do I need to do to check if I qualify for this loan forgiveness program. I am a Teacher Specialist now and I teach Reading Intervetion to the kids that need critical intervention. Thanks

Please look through the information on each of the websites above for details, and contact the agencies directly with any questions. Since HISD does not administer these programs, the organizations that offer them would be the best folks to ask about anything not addressed in the materials online.
