The 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina serves as a reminder of our region’s vulnerability to Mother Nature’s power. Inclement weather can wreak havoc on the Houston area, and it’s important for HISD is able to communicate with employees during these times.

That’s why the district is encouraging all employees to sign up for text message notifications. This service allows HISD to instantly communicate with employees in the event of weather or other emergencies or when district-wide notifications need to be sent.

  1. Text “YES” to 68453. In response, you will receive a confirmation that says “You are now registered with the SchoolMessenger notification service.” If you decide at some point that you do not want to receive texts, simply text “STOP” or “NO” to 68453. If you want to opt back in, just text “YES” to the same number. It takes effect immediately.
  2. Make sure that your cell phone number is not only registered with the district but designated as your “primary” number. You can add or update your cell phone number via Employee Self Service on the HISD website. Additional information and instructions are provided on the HISD Text Messaging website accessible here.

Texting will only be used for emergencies or important districtwide news. You can also click here (.pdf) to find answers to common questions about the district’s text messaging service.
