A special message Superintendent Terry Grier

Dear Team HISD Member:

Today, I informed the HISD Board of Education that I have decided to step down as superintendent, effective March 1, 2016. I thanked them for the opportunity to lead this great school district for the past six years. I am truly honored to have been chosen for such a job. I will miss the daily adrenaline rush that comes with working in the dynamic, challenging, and rewarding environment of public education.

But there is one thing I’ll miss more than that rush. I’ll miss you. Trust me when I tell you there is something special about Team HISD. Whether walking the halls of a school and popping into classrooms for an impromptu visit, or hurrying down to the cafeteria for a quick meal between meetings, the people here in HISD are always wearing the same thing: a smile on their face. You are a fun bunch of people to work with, and your smiles made me smile.

Working in public education – be it as a teacher, principal, custodian, secretary, bus driver, or any other important job – is tough. It’s easy to become a cynic. But that’s not you. Here, we pulled together to help our students improve so much that we were named the top urban school district in America in 2013. We rallied to earn public trust and voter approval of the largest school building project in Texas history. We did it. All of us. Together. Team HISD.

I’m not one for long goodbyes. But I encourage you to click here to read more and reflect on all that we accomplished these past six years. You should be as proud of yourselves as I am to call you my friends.

God bless each of you. And God bless HISD.
