As Superintendent Terry Grier nears his last day as HISD’s top administrator, the staff at Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center gathered one last time on Monday to wish him well and thank him for his leadership.

A crowd of more than 100 gathered to listen to him say a few words and mingle with employees before he steps down officially on Monday, Feb. 29, 2016.

“I just feel so blessed and so honored and so humbled to have been able to work here with all of you for the last seven years,” Grier said. “This without question is the finest central office staff, the most caring the most dedicated, and the most competent that I’ve ever worked for. And I tell people all over the country that. So please know how much I love Houston, how much I love HISD, and how much I love all of you. I’m going to miss you.”

Grier was presented with a photo album that featured photos of him throughout the years at HISD, a tenure marked by an unwavering focus on equity, a decline the dropout rate, a five-fold increase in the amount of scholarship money earned by seniors, and continued focus on literacy for younger students.

“You’ve definitely left this place better than you found it,” said Interim Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer Ken Huewitt. “It’s a tough act to follow, even on an interim basis.”
