Herlinda Garcia awarded April’s Excellence in Leadership Award
After 49 years with HISD, most of which as J.P. Henderson Elementary principal, Herlinda Garcia is set to retire in August.
But before she leaves, the district chose to honor her with the April Excellence in Leadership Award to recognize her vision, leadership, and dedication to the students of HISD.
Garcia accepted the award at Wednesday’s Principals Meeting, during which she thanked former Superintendent Terry Grier for his leadership. She also commended Interim Superintendent Ken Huewitt for his inspiring speech at this year’s State of the Schools Luncheon, and said it helped her come to terms with her decision to retire because the district was in good hands.
During her nearly 50-year tenure, Garcia earned a reputation as a no-frills educator with a can-do attitude, one that has helped inspire many of her former students to return to Henderson Elementary as teachers. She also has served as a teacher, bilingual educational specialist, and assistant principal during her time with HISD.
