Lead testing to begin at all schools starting with elementary campuses

by HISD Communications

Due to concerns about lead in drinking water in various states across the nation, HISD is taking precautionary measures to ensure that all water consumed by students is of a quality nature.

Starting with elementary school campuses, all water fountains and one component in every kitchen will be tested. The district also will implement a preventative maintenance program for annual filter replacement on drinking water fountains. You can find a searchable database of estimated testing dates for elementary schools at houstonisd.org/leadtesting, as well as a list of frequently asked questions. Results from testing are estimated to be returned within two weeks.

In order to comply with EPA standards and the City of Houston’s guidelines on testing water quality in a child care environment, HISD has requested that the City of Houston’s Public Works and Engineering Department (Water Quality Division) perform random inspections and audits of the process that HISD intends to follow.

The HISD Facilities Services department will continue to update the schedule and information throughout the testing process.
