As HISD continues its efforts to digitally transform teaching and learning, the district will be transitioning to a new online platform called the PowerUp:HUB, or “HUB” for short. A select group of K–12 campuses will be taking part in a HUB pilot program this school year. However,all teachers can access the district’s curriculum through the HUB at www.houstonisd.org/hub.
To make things more efficient, access to the HUB is single sign-on, meaning once teachers sign on to their computer with their HISD user I.D. and password, they will not need to re-enter it to access the HUB. Teachers should plan to use the HUB as their primarysource for curricula in core courses. If they encounter any difficulties, core curricula will be loaded into www.hisdelearn.org for the 2014–2015 school year as a backup measure.
In addition to HISD curriculum documents, teachers can also directly access a variety of district applications through the HUB, such as A4E, Gradespeed, EdPlan, and Easy IEP, as well as nearly two dozen third-party applications and outside digital resources including Istation, Khan Academy, ABC Clio, and many more. Sanja Korman in action at Bellaire HS
Sanja Korman had only been in the United States for a few years in 1999, when she joined Team HISD as a dance teacher at Bellaire High School. But since then, she has created an award-winning dance troupe (eMOTION), become a naturalized citizen, and even been recognized for her teaching prowess at the national level.
“I felt right at home when I came here,” said the Bosnian native. “My students helped me and made me feel very welcome. I taught them to dance and they taught me everything else! I think I’m the only one who is depressed when school is out.”
Korman listed a few of her proudest achievements as being named Dance Teacher of the Year twice in 2008 by two different organizations, and her contributions to the state’s new dance standards, which she helped develop as a member of the Texas Education Agency’s fine arts review committee.
“Dance is a very elegant, emotional, and passionate art form,” noted Korman. “For young people, it is also a powerful way of expressing themselves—and for some, the only way. Young people must conform to so much in our society, but with dance, there are no borders. Only your imagination limits you, so creativity is not suppressed. I love watching young people tell me a story through their movements.”
Korman officially marked her 15th anniversary with the district on Aug. 11, but a few other employees are also marking theirs this week (Aug. 10–16). See if you know anyone on this list:

This exciting new resource is accessed through a new tool called the Solution Center.
The Solution Center will house many online courses and training guides for commonly used applications, such as SAP, Chancery, PeopleSoft, and Microsoft, and more.
To access the site, simply click the link above, or look for “Solution Center” in the “Most Requested” links section on the Employee subchannel. The Solution Center is only available inside the district’s network.

Christal Espinosa
When Christal Espinosa first joined HISD back in 1999, she had no idea that she would one day be analyzing fingerprints and reviewing criminal records. But that is precisely what the Milby High School graduate has been doing for the past nine years, as a criminal history technician in the Human Resources department.
“I started working for the district straight out of high school to help support my family,” said Espinosa. “I began as clerk in payroll back at the Taj Mahal, before PeopleSoft, but after I moved to HR, I would assist one of the girls who did the background checks and fingerprinting, and then I applied when they had an opening.”
Espinosa says she has developed an interest in criminal justice since assuming her new role in 2005, and she now plans to obtain a degree in that field someday.
“I’m the bad guy for the people who are not eligible,” she explained. “But I don’t let anybody in who doesn’t need to be here. Students and staff are safe due to what I do every day. That’s what makes me feel good.”

Superintendent of Schools Terry Grier recognized eight district employees at the regular quarterly staff meeting held on Aug. 6. The following staff members were recognized with Team HISD hats:
- Michael Benford, HISD Police Dept., for holding his staff to a very high standard and encouraging them to have a sense of urgency when serving stakeholders.
- Gang Hao, IT, who supports three major district initiatives—A4E Dashboards, Enterprise Data Warehouse, and eSHARS—any of which could be considered a full-time job.
- Marcus McCauther, IT/Police Dept., for his efforts to make sure that the district was in compliance with current laws pertaining to criminal justice information services mandates.
- Justin Silhavy, Student Support Services, who was instrumental in creating a demographic database that allows school-by-school comparisons for the first time.
- Blanca Saldana, Strategic Partnerships, who coordinates the district’s Hispanic Heritage Month and Advisory Committee and has led efforts to build engagement in the Hispanic community.
- Jeff Sanders, Administrative Services, for his innate professionalism and responsiveness to customers.
- Davant Stewart, IT, who mentors other developers in his department and is considered the “father” of the Enterprise Data Warehouse’s predecessor.
- Sgt. Tridung Tran, who took the initiative to learn a new records management system while recovering from surgery and volunteered to train all other officers on how to use it.
