HISD history teachers win seats at humanities institute

2013 August 15
by HISD Communications

Twelve HISD history teachers were in the 2013 cohort of the Humanities Texas' summer professional development institute.

More than 600 history teachers from across the state applied to “America at War in the Twentieth Century,” a professional development institute sponsored by Humanities Texas, the University of Houston, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, and of the 150 who were chosen, almost one in ten were from HISD schools.

The district had 12 teachers selected to participate. They received training in June from leading scholars in the field of humanities, such as Charles Flanagan, director of educational programs at the National Archives and Records Administration, and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy of Stanford University.

“The institute helped me broaden my (subject) knowledge by showing me alternative ways to present information to my students,” said Lisa Williams, a Texas history teacher from Jackson Middle School. “We were given a great amount of material to make our subject and classroom experience more interesting and challenging, such as different websites we can turn to for visual effects of certain aspects of history.”

Other HISD teachers who participated in the institute were: Danielle Arriola (Fleming MS), Kristin Clarke (Clifton MS), Kevin Frei (Madison HS), Barbara Massoud (Revere MS), David McBride (Burbank MS), Jared Mosley (Burbank MS), Tri Nguyen (Jackson MS), Pearl Perez (Fleming MS), Annemarie Potts (Lee HS), Niv Regev (Pershing MS), and Kelsey Sexton (Scarborough HS).

Congratulations also go out this week to:

  • Chávez High School teacher Carolyn (Schupp) Teas, who was named the “Top Cycle 6 Site Coordinator for the State of Texas” at the Texas Education Agency’s recent Afterschool Center on Education (ACE) Conference. ACE is a 21st Century Community Learning Centers program funded by the United States Department of Education.
If you know someone who should be featured in Accolades, please email us at info@houstonisd.org and tell us why.

Ask HISD: How do I get rid of SPAM in my inbox?

2013 August 15
by HISD Communications

Q: I keep receiving emails from some guy named “Harvey Gipson” asking me to confirm my inbox by clicking on a link embedded in the message field. This is SPAM, right? Or a phishing expedition? How do I get it to stop?

A:  Yes. This is definitely SPAM (and probably a phishing expedition as well), so whatever you do, don’t click the link. You can report any suspicious emails you receive directly to the IT Department by forwarding them to spam@houstonisd.org for investigation. Then just delete the offending email from your inbox queue.

Medical plan premiums dropping for 2014

2013 August 8
by HISD Communications

Annual enrollment is just around the corner, and we have great news! The Board of Education approved our 2014 Benefits Program, and some really positive changes are on the way.

First, medical plan premiums will be going down in 2014. Way down. As in, employee rates will be 20% less for the Consumer and Open Access plans, whether you have employee-only coverage or your entire family is enrolled.

On top of that, with one exception, rates are going down or staying the same for all of the voluntary plans.

We’re also offering a new and expanded low-cost health plan to replace the FSA + Discount Benefits Plan. This will be a true medical plan at very affordable rates for those who qualify and will meet the Affordable Care Act individual medical coverage requirement starting next year.

How is this possible? Because HISD employees are doing such a good job managing their health care costs. You’re taking the time to understand your benefits and using them for all they’re worth—doing things like choosing generic drugs, using the ER only for emergencies, making smarter service-provider choices, participating in RedBrick Health wellness programs, losing weight, and more.

All of this adds up to healthier employees. It also helps HISD save money on its health plan, and now we’re passing those savings along to you.

Annual enrollment is November 7-21, 2013. Watch for more detailed information, coming soon. And start thinking about what you’re going to do with all the money you’re going to save.

The historic George Ranch will be hosting an Open House for Educators on Sat., Sept. 7, 2013, and all HISD history teachers are invited!

Come take a journey through our state’s history by following four generations of one Texas family dating back to the 1830’s.

The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and highlights include a tour of the facilities, sample activities at various locations, a cattle demonstration, and a quintessential chuck wagon lunch of beef stew, beans, cornbread, and fruit cobbler.

There is no charge for interested educators, but advance registration is required. To reserve a spot, please contact Susan Rezeppa at 281-343-0218 ext. 220 or send an email to education@georgeranch.org.

Teachers return to the classroom on Aug. 12

2013 August 8
by HISD Communications

The start of a new school year is only a few weeks away, and that means it’s almost time for teachers to report for duty.

HISD’s teachers will return to the classroom on Aug. 12, to begin ten days of preparation that include a four-day Rigor Institute, five days of campus-created professional development, and one day on which they’ll have time to set up their classrooms, organize their work spaces, and review a roster of incoming students.

Teachers at PowerUp campuses will also be assigned their laptops and receive additional training on how to incorporate them into their lesson plans. In addition, job-alike training will be available for counselors, nurses, teachers of non-core subjects (such as fine arts, health/P.E., etc.) and team members who serve in other positions.

The Rigor Institute is facilitated by teacher development specialists, curriculum specialists, and campus teacher leaders.

A decade spent making schools safer for kids

2013 August 8
by HISD Communications

Paul Rease

As team leader with HISD’s Risk Management department, Paul “Tony” Rease has spent the past decade making HISD schools safer by coordinating the removal of asbestos products from campus buildings.

The environmental consultant recently marked his tenth anniversary with the district, and he still derives a great deal of satisfaction from his job.

“Anything that was built prior to 1985, there’s a very good chance that there’s still asbestos in them,” explained Rease. “None had been remediated completely, because it was just too expensive. But I can remember being an ES student myself, and we used to throw our pencils up and stick them in the asbestos on the ceilings, then pull away handfuls of it when we got them down. I’m able to see that those sorts of conditions don’t exist in our district anymore.”

Rease officially marked his 10th anniversary with the district on Aug. 4, but several other employees are also marking theirs this week (Aug. 4–10).

Steve Jinkins

This week’s Shout Out goes to Steven Jinkins, a senior plant operator at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, from Jodie Wakefield in Multimedia Services.

“Every time our department needs something, Steven is just an email or a phone call away,” said Wakefield. “Recently, we coordinated a large workshop for employees in the Board Auditorium. Steven helped us line up everything we needed—even the things we didn’t realize we needed until the last minute! He also answered all of our questions and helped us with logistics.”

Wakefield noted that Jinkins and his team are always very quick to respond to requests. “They are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done,” she said. “I appreciate Steven and his entire team for their outstanding customer service.”
