One lucky graduating senior to drive away with new car Sunday

Smart Financial Credit Union donates 2015 Toyota Corolla for Cool to be Smart

One lucky HISD senior will drive away with a brand new car at HISD’s annual Cool to be Smart event on Sunday, May 17, at the Bayou City Event Center. The 2015 Toyota Corolla was donated by Smart Financial Credit Union,  a long-time supporter of HISD and the district’s commitment to expanding student access to Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate , and dual-credit courses.

“It’s an honor to sponsor this great program which rewards the hard work of HISD students,” said Smart Financial Credit Union CEO Gary Tuma.  “We only wish we could afford to give every outstanding HISD graduate a car to let them know congratulations, you are important, and job well done.”

Smart Financial and Joe Myers Toyota are taking the car on a “road trip” this week to visit several HISD high schools, so students can check out the new Corolla. Watch the video below to see the reaction from students at Eastwood Academy.

This is the fifth year for Cool to Be Smart, which honors HISD students who enroll in rigorous, college-prep courses while in high school. In addition to the car, eligible HISD juniors and seniors have a chance to win computers, college scholarships, gift cards, and a variety of other prizes. Only graduating seniors, however, have a chance to win the car.

In order to be eligible for Cool to be Smart, HISD juniors must have taken and passed a minimum of three AP, IB, or dual-credit courses. Seniors must have taken and passed a minimum of five.  Students who qualify should have already received a hand-delivered invitation. Eligible students should check with their campus to see if transportation is available on May 17.

Smart Financial Credit Union, formerly known as First Educators’ Credit Union, was launched in HISD during the 1930’s.

Paula McCloud, a graduating senior from Bellaire that will be attending Stanford next semester should be HISD’s lucky senior to win the Cool to be Smart Car Sunday. I’ve known her for several years and she’s an outstanding student and person overall. Throughout her years of high school, she’s had to deal with the loss of family members that were close to her. I would love to see Paula win the Cool to be Smart Car for all of her hard work that she’s invested in school.
