Gloria Xie, who won in the middle school category in 2014, also claimed that honor this year as a seventh-grader at Pershing Middle School. “I would just like to say thank you to my principal, Ms. (Kim) Heckman, and my teacher, Ms. Perugini, and my parents,” she said.

Each year, the district sends out hundreds of holiday greeting cards to principals, board members, legislators, local leaders, parents groups, and community partners. Since 2003, these cards have featured the artwork of HISD students.

The other students whose artwork was selected for 2015 were:

Fu, who hopes to study both art and medicine in college, said she was “speechless” to have been chosen as a winner. Her drawing shows a nutcracker and a teddy bear in front of a cheerful fireplace, as well as a partially eaten cookie and a few ornaments that she had when she was younger. “I love sweets,” she said, “so I wanted to add my own little twist on it. I wanted something really cute and kind of humorous.”

There were 49 finalists in all, and each will receive a poster of his or her artwork to display at school. Each student will also receive a set of 25 cards to send to family and friends.

“Talent comes in many different forms, and this is a group of very talented young people,” Superintendent Terry Grier said.

All of the finalists’ cards are available for purchase from the HISD Printing Services department. Click here (.pdf) for the order form. The deadline to purchase the cards is Friday, Dec. 4, 2015.

I am the art specialist at River Oaks Elementary. Although disappointed we did not have a finalist selected this year, I appreciate all the hard work and talent of the artists and the art teachers. I am also inquiring as to whether or not we will get our student entry (drawing) returned. I labled the drawing of 5th grade student, Samantha Tudor. If it is possible, she would like to have the drawing back. I am happy to come to the HMW building to pick it up. Please let me know.

    Thank you,

    Renee Lieber

I checked with Strategic Partnerships, and they said all artwork was returned last week through the district mail, so it make take a few days to get to the art teacher. Please let us know if it doesn’t show up by the end of the month.
