‘Leader in Me’ leading Longfellow ES students to academic excellence

Thousands of adults have benefited from Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People since that book was first published more than 20 years ago, and now, HISD students are starting to benefit from it, too.

Over the years, that self-help classic has been refined and reimagined to help young people cultivate a sense of personal responsibility and leadership skills, and the result is “The Leader in Me (LIM),” which is currently in place at Longfellow Elementary School and two other HISD campuses, Shearn ES and Garden Oaks Montessori.

“’The Leader in Me’ provides the most solid foundation I have ever seen to help kids lead a principled, centered life,” said Longfellow ES Principal Norma Perez-Gwynn. “It has made an incredible difference with our children.”

Nearly 40 people turned out Tuesday night to hear the latest update on the plan to rebuild Condit Elementary in Bellaire under the Houston Independent School District’s 2012 bond program.

The community meeting was designed to introduce the contractor who could be starting some site work in July, should the project get final approval by the City of Bellaire. HISD has pledged to keep neighborhoods informed as construction begins on all of the schools in the first phase of the bond program by the end of the year.

K-2 ‘Name That Book’ contest encourages reading at a young age

Everyone’s a winner just for competing in the HISD K-2 “Name That Book” contest, which was held March 3-7 at MC Williams Middle School. There were 10 winners — two winners on each of the five days — out of almost 80 participating elementary schools: Askew, Bell, Briargrove, Condit, Lockhart, Lovett, Mandarin Chinese, Valley West, West University, and Wharton Dual Language elementary schools. Each school can enter only one team. Students received medals and certificates for competing.

The annual K-2 competition prepares younger students for upper-level competition, which includes all grade levels and continues through April 17. Unlike the upper-level students, K-2 students only compete on one day. Middle school finalists – Black, Briarmeadow, Energized for Excellence, Energized for Stem Southwest, Grady, Johnston, Pin Oak, T. H. Rogers – compete at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14, at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center. See the full contest schedule here.

Design of new Condit ES reflects school’s connection to community

During a community meeting at Bellaire’s Condit Elementary School to discuss a new school being built under HISD’s 2012 bond program, one overriding theme emerged: the school’s long-standing ties to the community.

“Condit is more than just a school that happens to be in a neighborhood or community. Condit is really directly linked to our community,” Condit Principal Dan Greenberg told the crowd of about 65 parents, teachers and community members who gathered Tuesday night. “It’s rare to find a community that cares so much about the well-being of the school like we do here.”
