Paul Cordova has been appointed to Chief of the HISD Police Department.

Cordova has served as interim police chief since February, working to develop a new culture within the department while improving the agency’s perception. He and his officers were specifically tasked with finding better ways to serve our students and communities.

“In just a short period of time, he has been able to lead the police department through several major initiatives, including establishing a substation in the northwest area of the district to better serve schools located in that area, reorganizing the department to make better use of budgetary resources, and reviewing and revising existing policies to ensure consistency with industry best practices,” Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan said. Police officer’s service in HISD spans from helping schools to serving alongside superintendent

Every morning, Brenson York prepares for a day full of surprises. As an HISD police officer assigned to the superintendent’s security detail, he must be ready for anything.

“I’ve done and seen almost everything,” York said with a chuckle. “From driving the superintendent to local meetings around the city to making turn-around trips to Austin — even providing security at events, monthly board meetings, and, of course, hundreds of school visits.”

According to York, fighting Houston traffic, navigating backroads, finding detours, and waking up before sunrise for early morning meetings are just part of the gig. He also serves as the eyes and ears for HISD’s superintendent, often acting as a needed buffer for the school district chief at public events. Continue reading →

Officers challenged to ‘make a difference’ at HISD Police awards luncheon

HISD Police Chief Robert Mock encouraged his officers to get to know and build relationships with students, as he addressed the group at the department’s 20th Annual Awards Luncheon on Friday.

“You have the ability get to know these students and intervene in their lives,” Mock said. “I challenge each one of you to choose to make a difference.”

HISD police officers, personnel, and family members gathered at Brady’s Landing restaurant for the event, which celebrates the achievements, contributions, and outstanding customer service provided by the department during the academic school year. Continue reading →

Wearing sharp black uniforms adorned with embroidered patches, newly appointed Assistant Chief Paul Cordova and 11 new officers filed into the Thomas Middle School gym on Monday ready to be sworn in as the district’s newest law enforcement officers.

Family, friends, and colleagues cheered as each officer had a shiny silver badge pinned to their uniform.

“Today is a momentous occasion,” HISD Police Chief Robert Mock said, noting that the badges conveyed great responsibility. “This a day you are given great trust, a day to become a leader.”

With Monday’s swearing-in ceremony being the largest to date, the HISD Police Department now boasts of 216 officers. It is the only accredited public school district police department in the nation, responding to more than 81,380 calls per year across 300 square miles.  Continue reading →

HISD Police sends student safety reminder for graduation and summer break

With the school year winding down, HISD Police is joining forces with local religious leaders, school district administrators, and law enforcement agencies to emphasize the importance of student safety.

The message is a key part of Project Safe Start. Established in 1989, the program aims to beef up police patrols in and around campuses during the last week of school to help prevent criminal activity and increase student safety as summer vacation begins.

“In HISD, our job is not over until every child makes it home safely,” HISD Police Lt. James Bridges said. “We take this responsibility very seriously, and the commitment to ensuring that this is accomplished each day.”

The Houston Independent School District Police Department has announced the winners of the third annual Police Appreciation Week art contest.

Fifth-grade artists were encouraged to showcase their talents with the department’s K-9 unit as the theme. Participants also explored other themes, including the importance of law enforcement and the different types of police officers.

HISD Police Department to host ‘Coffee with a Cop’

(Houston Independent School District)The HISD Police Department will be hosting “Coffee with a Cop” for the community on Tuesday, April 25, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the McDonald’s located on 2515 Fulton St.

During the event, residents will have the opportunity to meet with officers and ask them questions

Created in 2011, Coffee with a Cop was initiated via partnership between the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, and other law enforcement agencies in response to tensions between the police and community.

HISD Police Department hosting third annual art contest

Grab your markers, crayons, and No. 2 pencils, because registration is now open for the HISD Police Department’s third annual art contest in honor of Police Appreciation Week.

Aspiring artists in the fifth grade are free to use any type of material to showcase their inner Picasso in this year’s contest. Artwork can be submitted by individual HISD students or on behalf of an entire HISD classroom.

Designed to recognize Police Appreciation Week, which kicks off on May 15, the contest aims to help students visualize the work performed by police officers and, perhaps, go on to choose a career in law enforcement.

HISD police sergeant retires after 41 years of service with district

HISD Police Sgt. Adolph Saenz could barely hold back his emotions after walking into a surprise retirement celebration on Monday afternoon.

“I’ve worked with so many of you all for these years and it’s like family,” Saenz said to a room filled with 50 well-wishers. “I’ve spent more time on the job than I have with my own family, and I appreciate each and every one of you. I’ve got beautiful memories and I appreciate you all being in my life and you’ve made a difference in me.”

After 41 years with the department, Saenz is saying farewell to the nation’s only accredited school district police department, but not without a lot of soul-searching.

“I wrote my letter all the way in July, and I always would change the date,” Saenz said. “The day I decided to do it, I was walking down the hallway knowing that was the hardest thing in the world for me to do.”

HISD PD to throw crime a going-away party for National Night Out

The Houston Independent School District Police Department is celebrating National Night Out by giving crime a going-away party on Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.

HISD Police are hosting the “Giving Crime a Going-Away Party” at their department headquarters at 3500 Tampa St., 77021. The community is invited to celebrate with free food and drinks, music, games, and prizes. Several law enforcement agencies, as well as fire-safety and health vendors, will be on hand to meet with the community.
