Workshop Wednesday features tips for achieving desired results

About 40 business representatives participated in this month’s Workshop Wednesday, hosted by HISD’s Business Assistance Supplier Diversity department, which featured a high-energy interactive presentation by author and artist Amy Malkan entitled Achieving Your Desired Results.

Malkan led the group through activities and examples demonstrating that most people are conditioned to view situations from a certain point of view. She said that changing your perspective is often effective in improving your outcomes.

“We are conditioned with our own belief system and our perceptions of how we see the world,” Malkan said. “Every one of us have blind spots, but if you can put yourself in the other person’s shoes, whether it’s your customer, your boss, or your spouse, you will be more likely to get a positive result.” Continue reading

Bond Oversight Committee receives program update at quarterly meeting

The Bond Oversight Committee convenes on Tuesday to review fourth quarter progress on the bond program.

The Bond Oversight Committee convenes on Tuesday to review fourth quarter progress on the bond program.

HISD’s Bond Oversight Committee held its quarterly meeting on Tuesday, with the panel receiving an update on the district’s $1.89 billion bond program covering the fourth quarter 2015.

The panel was briefed on project highlights of several schools and heard from HISD’s Chief Information Technology Officer Lenny Schad, who also is acting chief operating officer overseeing the bond program.

HISD helps local startup companies learn how to apply for business loans

Loan officer Anthony Lopez of LiftFund WW Jan 16this week offered tips to local business owners on securing small business loans for startup businesses.

“We finance startup businesses, and we have a simple formula that we give to our customers to discover what they need to qualify for a loan,” Lopez said during HISD’s monthly Workshop Wednesday.

The sessions are held on the first Wednesday of the month and are hosted by HISD’s Business Assistance Supplier Diversity department.

HISD’s Business Assistance Supplier Diversity team participated this week in the in the Houston Minority Supplier Development Council (HMSDC) Business Expo, which was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The annual event, which attracts more than 1,500 corporate buyers, government agencies, and educational institutions, provides an excellent opportunity for businesses of all sizes to grow their networks.  HISD took part in hopes of identifying more minority- and women-owned business enterprises (M/WBEs) that might be interested in future procurement opportunities in the district.

Email marketing strategies featured at November’s Workshop Wednesday

This month’s Workshop Wednesday featured marketing strategist and author Toni Harris, who discussed the power of email marketing and social media engagement in growing a business.

“Email marketing is a way to hand your message to your clients,” said Harris, who also represents Constant Contact, the largest email marketing company in the world. “Only a small percentage of your contacts will see your social media posts, a lot more will see your direct email, so it’s important to create content that engages your audience.”
