Penalty-free resignation deadline for contract employees
All employees looking to separate from Houston Independent School District are required to submit an official electronic voluntary separation form. The electronic voluntary separation form is accessible online through OneSource Employee Self-Service.
Per Chapter 21 of the Texas Education Code (TEC), educators are required to resign a contract no later than 45 days before the first day of instruction. The first day of instruction for the 2023-2024 school year is Aug. 28, 2023. Contract employees seeking to resign must submit their electronic resignation form to the Office of Talent no later than July 14, 2023. Per the Texas Education Code, a district may release an educator voluntarily, but is not obligated to do so after the 45th day has passed.
If an educator chooses to resign after the penalty-free period ends on July 14, HISD has the authority to submit a written complaint to the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), and SBEC may impose sanctions against the educator for breach of their employment contract. Also, eligibility for re-employment with HISD may be restricted for up to two school years.
