Personalized professional development helps staff grow

HISD is committed to providing the best possible education for our students, but employees also have the opportunity to learn new skills to enhance their careers.

The Onboarding and Organizational Development team offers 18 classes throughout the year – with topics ranging from time management to effective business writing – which are designed by HISD employees for HISD employees.

And with annual goal-setting meetings taking place, now is a perfect time to review the department’s calendar and pick an upcoming class or two that will help you reach your professional goals.

Yolanda Prier, senior budget analyst for Budgeting & Financial Development, has taken several classes during the past year. She said all have been informative and helpful when it comes to applying those lessons to her own job.

“I am always looking for ways to improve professionally as well as personally,” Prier said. “I believe as we improve upon our skill set, we add value to the organization, the department, and individually.”

What makes HISD’s professional development classes unique is that they are designed specifically for district employees. These courses are presented in the context of a public education system because of the specialized work district employees do.

“Off-the-shelf training is often not applicable here, because we measure success in terms of student achievement, not revenue,” said Sandy Henderson, an onboarding program specialist.

“Sign up. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain,” Prier added. “The district is offering a valuable resource, and employees should want to take advantage of the opportunity to improve both professionally and personally.”
