MRG looking for mentors and ways to improve onboarding process for new managers

Department leaders and managers from the across the district gathered at the Houston Improv on October 21 not only for some laughs, but for some serious discussion on ways to support each other and share best practices. The gathering was the official kick off for the district’s Manager Resource Group (MRG) which is designed to bring together HISD managers in an open dialogue to discuss issues facing HISD departments/teams and to collaborate on strategies to offer continuous development for the district’s managerial community.

The inaugural event featured several presenters and panelists who provided insight as well practical tools to support district managers. A local comedian also hit the Improv stage to lighten the mood and get the group talking about ways to better support new managers, including those promoted from within and those new to the district.

“I loved it. It was out of the box, different, and I really enjoyed meeting people from outside my department,” said IT Senior Manager Janet Bennett. “I commend Onboarding and Organizational Development for forming this group. It’s long overdue, and I think it will be helpful for existing managers like me and new managers as well.”

Managers who missed the MRG kick-off meeting and are interested in receiving a monthly email with upcoming events, training, and resources can email Organizational Development Specialist Nick Guidry at nguidry@houstonisd.org. The MRG leadership team is also looking for experienced managers who want to serve as mentors and help develop a more effective onboarding process.

“We really want to look for ways to better assimilate and accelerate new managers into the district’s cultural and business areas and also support them as they navigate internal networks and relationships, “ said Guidry. “The more help we can get the better.”
