Bonner and Bush ES featured in WOW! Moment video

Teacher and school leaders from Bonner and Bush elementary schools are sharing their best practices around the effective use of Education Value-Added Assessment Systems (EVAAS) to improve instruction in a new WOW! Moment video featured at the districtwide Dec. 9, principals’ meeting.

In the video, Bush Elementary teacher Edith Hillman candidly talks about having a low EVAAS score in the past. But through support from her principal and by changing certain practices in her classroom, she was able to raise her score dramatically. Her successful practices were then shared with other teachers on her campus, who are now also are seeing growth in their EVAAS scores.

“It’s scary at the beginning, and you have to take a deep breath and say, ‘I didn’t do the best job this year. What can I do next year to improve?’ ” Hillman said. “I think it is making me a better teacher. I think I am improving every year, as a teacher.”

EVAAS is a tool the district uses to measure the impact that individual schools and teachers have on a student’s academic growth from year to year. HISD began using EVAAS in 2007, and since then the district has been providing ongoing professional development to teachers and principals on how to use value-added data in school improvement efforts, to evaluate program quality, and to inform classroom instruction.

EVAAS is great! I use it every single day yo drive my instruction. I have a data driven classroom thanks to EVAAS. My students use data and test prepping endlessly to prepare for our state assessment.
