Behavior management focus of June’s Professional Learning Series

Strategies, resources, and best practices for classroom and student behavior management will be offered at various sessions during the district’s annual summer leadership conference. The June 13-15 Professional Learning (PLS) series at NRG Park is open to HISD counselors, assistant principals, instructional coordinators, and lead teachers, as well as other staff selected by each school principal.  

Student Support Services is collaborating with multiple departments—Counseling and Guidance, Child Study, Health and Medical Services, Psychological Services, and with Region IV—to offer concurrent sessions on managing behavior and supporting student engagement during days one and two of the PLS.

Elementary schools are highly encouraged to send multiple staff members to these sessions because of new district policy that bans suspensions and expulsions for students in second grade and below, except as required by law. 

Sessions will provide participants opportunities to build capacity and learn essential skills to manage behavior proactively on their campuses. For instance, one of the sessions will focus on implicit bias, its impact on discipline, and strategies to address it for equitable instructional and classroom management practices. Other topics include:

  • Cultural relevancy in instruction
  • Tools for managing problem behaviors
  • Building relationships with reluctant learners
  • Early stage behavior interventions
  • Conflict resolution
  • De-escalation techniques and crisis management
  • Chronic absenteeism
  • Bullying prevention
  • Supporting classroom management

Experts on specific subjects, such as mental health awareness, poverty and cognitive development, trauma, resiliency, and the learning process, will provide additional strategies and resources.
