Westside HS teacher earns top honors at HAASBE ceremony

Westside High School’s Shelby Steward was recently named the 2017 Secondary Teacher of the Year during the 30th annual Outstanding Teacher Awards and Recognition Ceremony for the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators.

Steward was one of four former and current HISD educators honored during the ceremony. Atherton ES Principal Dr. Albert Lemons, was recognized for 50 years of service, and Dr. Mattelia B. Grays, retired District III Superintendent, received the prestigious Living Legend Award. Kimberley Chandler from the Houston Academy for International Studies finished second in the Secondary Teacher of Year category. 

The HAABSE ceremony, which was held on Jan. 18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, included more than 140 educators from the Region IV area, including Alief, Alvin, Brazosport, Channelview, Crosby, Cy-Fair, Fort Bend Lamar Consolidated, Galena Park, Katy, Sheldon, Spring, Stafford Municipal, and the Rhodes School were recognized. HISD had 45 educators in attendance.

In addition, Westbury HS senior Martina Salgado received a scholarship as she plans to attend college and become a teacher. Kayla Bradshaw, a junior from Yates HS, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies, the first time a high student served in that capacity for the ceremony.

The ceremony is an annual event that celebrates and recognizes teachers for their outstanding work with students across the Houston metropolitan area.
