New Leave Balance Overview in OneSource
New leave balance overview to launch in OneSource for the 2018-2019 school year
Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, employees will be able to view their leave balance information in more detail utilizing OneSource. The new feature will display employees’ carry forward from the previous year (if any), advanced but not earned, accrued (earned) as of current date.
Below is example of “advanced but not earned”:
There will be no change in the process of how an employee request leave, or in the number of hours of leave an employee receives.
Here are the changes employees can expect:
- If an employee overuses their leave, it will be deducted out of their last pay check of the year or upon return from unpaid leave.
- Leave is accrued daily instead of per pay period.
- When an employee requests leave, the leave will initially be deducted from carry over from the previous year (if any), then from the advance but not earned.
- Employees won’t be able to request leave for the 2018-2019 school year until the leave is advanced, even if they have leave balance from prior years. Leave will be advanced 10 days before the start of the new duty schedule.
Below are the dates that each group will see their advanced leave for the 2018-2019 school year:

HISD Facilities Services & Fleet holds management training
Nearly 40 HISD Facilities Services and Fleet managers gathered Wednesday for training designed to strengthen their leadership skills and teach them how to better coach and mentor their own employees.
The training focused on four key areas — work order processes, effective communication, safety and security, and project request processes.
After a general welcome and introduction by Facilities and Fleet Services Officer Alishia Jolivette and Facilities Finance and Accountability Senior Manager Kendrick Solomon, employees were split into four groups and led to different classroom areas for workshop sessions led by Facilities Services general managers.

“The goal for us is to grow additional leaders,” HISD Facilities and Fleet Services Officer Alishia Jolivette said. “It’s up to those that we are coaching up to carry the torch and continue on.”
Jolivette stressed to employees the importance of the day’s training and the value of sharing information to strengthen the team.
“We are all leaders,” Jolivette said. “It’s about taking information and putting it into our toolbox to share with others to grow as additional leaders.”
“Communication is key, without it we don’t exist. It’s all about how we communicate, and it’s up to us to pick each other up,” Jolivette added.
Prior to the trainings, Jolivette took a moment to recognize employees for their years of service, which ranged from one year to more than 30.
“These are our experts. This is the district. This is our knowledge,” Jolivette said. “Make sure you partner with these experts.”
Customer Care and Operations Senior Manager German Enamorado, whose department focuses mainly on the work force process, said he hopes the training was well-received and that managers share the knowledge with their teams when they get back to their officers.
“Everything is moving towards technology,” Enamorado said, mentioning that his work will soon be completed via tablets. “We want to practice, see the change, and move towards that.”
Nutrition Services LEAD program graduates inaugural class
After eight weeks of rigorous classroom and on-site training, four former food service attendants are now prepared to lead and manage their own school cafeterias.
Stephanie Aguilar, Alma Dominguez, Neco Manning, and Tameco Williams are the first graduates of Nutrition Services’ LEAD — Leadership, Education And Development — Program.
The comprehensive training initiative is designed to provide school cafeteria workers with the in-depth knowledge and skills needed to advance to the next level in their career and become a team lead responsible for managing cafeteria operations.
“Tenacity is the word that comes to mind when I think of you four,” Nutrition Services Trainer Maggie Kennedy said to the inaugural class before presenting them with certificates during a recent ceremony. “I am so proud of you all and the example you have set for the program.”
The LEAD program is designed to teach employees both the technical and leadership skills needed to manage a school cafeteria. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, ranging from building a relationship with the school principal to managing food costs. The program will be held twice a year.
All LEAD participants must meet a strict set of criteria and be recommended for the program. Once accepted, they are required to pass a series of tests to demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered.
“You went through the rigor. Now you are practitioners,” Nutrition Services Officer Betti Wiggins said, as she congratulated the graduates. “You are on a long journey. You went through the hard work and now you have to demonstrate the craft consistently. Be the best that you know you are.”

HISD Nutrition Services employees were all-smiles this week as more than 1,500 team members took gathered at Wheatley High School for the department’s first annual Employee Appreciation Celebration.
Attendees enjoyed dancing, volleyball, games and good food as they reveled in the praise of Nutrition Services Officer Betti Wiggins, who thanked them for their hard work, dedication, and service to students.
“Thank you for all you do,” Wiggins said. “Nothing we do would be possible without all of you serving as one. I love you all, and I am thankful for you all embracing me.”
Wiggins told the group they had set record numbers for the year — including serving 41 million meals, which averages out to 280,000 meals per day.
The team also was lauded for their work in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, as they ensured nutritious food was available to students following the storm.
“It is so great to see all of us in one place together,” Warehouse Team Lead John Whiting said. “I can see things are changing for the better. We needed this.”
Nutrition Services produces scratch-based meals every day for HISD’s 215,000 students in 287 schools. The department also serves 20 million breakfast meals annually, making it the largest breakfast classroom program in the country.
