2016 W-2 forms now available on OneSource

Your 2016 W-2 form is now available to view and print through the employee self-service feature in OneSource.

To view and/or print your form, log into OneSource using your network user name and password. Then select the “Employee Self-Service” tab in the upper left-hand corner, then “View Online W-2.” Click on the row to highlight the 2016 W-2 form, and then click “Display.”

  • Are your teaching practices inclusive? Inclusion is about all learners being able to feel expected, respected, and reflected in the learning environment. We know that we will have learner variability in our classroom, and with the tools available in the Inclusive Services HUB course, you can continue to plan for the diverse learners in yours. The course features resources on Universal Design for Learning, guidance on inclusion implementation (which can also be found on HISD Special Education Operating Guidelines) and PD materials from inclusion trainings. To find Inclusion resources, enroll in the “Inclusive Services” HUB course. For additional support, you can also reach out to Dr. Barbara Mullen at bmullen@houstonisd.org.
  • Are you seeking Texas bilingual or ESL certification? Texas A&M University is providing an opportunity for HISD teachers to take advantage of free online preparation and professional development courses for those seeking a bilingual or ESL certification. Project Empowering Teachers of English Language Learners (ETELL) is a professional development and research project to help certify and prepare bilingual and ESL teachers for Texas classrooms. All participants will receive free bilingual or ESL online certification prep courses, with opportunities for reimbursement of their exam fees and to earn professional development hours. Additionally, the project will reimburse teachers’ exam fee(s) upon successful passage of the exam(s) and provide free instructional materials for the courses. Classes begin Feb. 13, 2107.   • ‘Scratch and Beyond’ builds on your coding knowledge/lessons: The Advanced Academics Department, STEM Teacher Development Team will present Scratch and Beyond: An Advanced Experience in Computer Coding for grades 3–8 teachers from 8-11 a.m. Feb. 2 at the Ryan PD Center. Skills in computer coding and computational thinking are essential to strengthening students’ problem-solving abilities and have a direct effect on math and science success for the Global Graduate. This advanced course is designed for those who are interested in the integration of computational and logical thinking and computer coding into all content areas. Participants will explore the Scratch platform at an intermediate to advanced level and leave with an understanding of strategies to integrate coding into reading, writing, math, and science. The focus of the session is using Scratch to create interactive games, both as instructional tools and student products. Please bring a laptop and personal headphones to the session. ELEMENTARY TEACHERS

  • Speakers to highlight best Literacy By 3 practices: The Elementary Curriculum and Development Department is proud to offer the HISD Elementary Literacy Leader Speaker Series, which is aligned to Literacy By 3 best practices. Pam Allyn, Lester Laminack, and Donalyn Miller are three nationally recognized literacy authors, educators, and public speakers who will offer invaluable sessions for elementary teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders this spring. SECONDARY TEACHERS

  • Free Mexican-American Studies conference approaching: The University of Houston Center for Mexican American Studies is hosting its spring conference March 31-April 1, titled “Implementing Mexican American Studies in Texas Public Schools: The Power of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy.” HISD’s Advanced Academics Department encourages high school educators – including current and possible future Mexican American Studies teachers – to attend this free conference. Campus administrators should also consider attending, especially if their campus intends to offer Mexican American Studies as a course during the 2017-2018 academic year. Interested attendees can RSVP by sending an email message to cmas@central.uh.edu, and should include their name, title, and campus affiliation in the message. Conference participants may also attend a kick-off reception at Talento Bilingüe de Houston (TBH), March 30, 2017, beginning 5:30pm.
  • Calculator skills not adding up? Attend these trainings: Register today for TI Calculator Training for Middle School STAAR Mathematics Courses, hosted by Fondren Middle School on Monday. Grades 6, 7, and 8 mathematics teachers will learn more about focusing on questioning strategies and calculators that will be useful for STAAR remediation/reteach lessons. The sessions are scheduled for 4–5:30 p.m., and there will be follow-up coaching sessions available for teachers who want to reflect on their implementation of the questioning strategies and activities. Non-instructional and instructional support staff are invited to attend HISD’s second Paraprofessionals Forum of the year to help grow and develop their existing skills to support students.

The forum, which is scheduled for 1-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, will take place at Wheatley High School. Feb. 22 is an early release day for the district.  read more…

Westside HS teacher earns top honors at HAASBE ceremony

Westside High School’s Shelby Steward was recently named the 2017 Secondary Teacher of the Year during the 30th annual Outstanding Teacher Awards and Recognition Ceremony for the Houston Area Alliance of Black School Educators.

Steward was one of four former and current HISD educators honored during the ceremony. Atherton ES Principal Dr. Albert Lemons, was recognized for 50 years of service, and Dr. Mattelia B. Grays, retired District III Superintendent, received the prestigious Living Legend Award. Kimberley Chandler from the Houston Academy for International Studies finished second in the Secondary Teacher of Year category.  read more…

  • Training offered to help schools increase parent/community engagement: Need innovative ideas to increase parent and community engagement? Attend one of the online courses created by Family and Community Engagement. Sessions include Family and Community Engagement Fundamentals, Two-Way Communication, and Parent-Teacher Conferences. All HISD school faculty and staff members are invited to participate for professional development credit hours. The sessions are offered January through June 2017. Please register for your preferred session through OneSource. The Fundamentals Course Number is 29022, Two-Way Communication is 29023, and Parent-Teacher Conferences is 29030.   • Summit to feature insight into sportsmedia industry: All HISD teachers, staff, and students are invited to attend the Summit on Sports Media, where speakers will share candid insights about the emerging technology, trends, and best practices shaping media communications. The day-long conference on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at University of Houston will feature thought leaders from the sports industry who will discuss topics such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, and how sports brands are applying this new tech to engage Gen Z and Millennial audiences.   • Webinars help teachers incorporate UDL in classroom: Sign up today for a webinar that will help you apply instructional best practices with the Goalbook Toolkit. At 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, teachers can tune into the session From Knowing to Doing, Four Ways to Incorporate the Principles of Universal Design for Learning in Your Classroom.   • Learn how to get students active at HPE Professionals conference: The Health/Physical Education (HPE) Winter Conference PK-12 event is for HPE professionals and will cover a variety of topics relevant to advancing professional practices related to health, physical education, physical activity, and outdoor recreation. The conference will feature one general session and choice breakout sessions. The conference begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Revere Middle School. Be sure to dress for physical activity. Time reporting for inclement weather day on Jan. 18, 2017

Inclement weather and hazardous driving conditions delayed the start of school until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18. If you were able to report to work by that time, your pay will not be impacted.

However, any employees who reported for duty after 10 a.m. should work with their supervisor to make up any time beyond the two-hour delay by Sunday, Jan. 22. Employees who cannot make up this time should submit vacation or personal leave time to cover any hours absent beyond the two-hour delay.

Employees who were unable to report to work on Wednesday should use a full day of vacation or personal leave to cover the absence.

National Wildlife Federation offers STEM teachers professional development and grant opportunity

The National Wildlife Federation is hosting workshops for both elementary and secondary science and STEM teachers on Sat. Jan 21.  HISD campuses that send a team are eligible for a grant of up to $500 to implement a sustainability project in Spring 2017.

Participants will learn how to use project-based learning to engage students in experiential science education that includes identifying an environmental problem on their campus and designing and implementing a solution to the problem.  read more…

Choose to receive 2016 W2 forms electronically or via U.S. mail

HISD is required by the IRS to furnish all employees with a W-2 form each calendar year they work for the district. The W-2 form details an employee’s compensation, tax withholdings, and required disclosures. In the past, HISD employees have received paper copies of their W‐2 via the U.S. mail.   read more…
