Students are more willing to learn something if they understand how it relates to the real world. Last week, a group of HISD teachers entered the business world to gain hands-on experience that they can use in the classroom to help students connect industry standards with classroom curriculum.
Twenty-two HISD teachers from nine high schools participated in the third annual Teacher Externship Week, a program sponsored by Linked Learning that promotes job-based education. The teachers spent four days working at five organizations—Gap, Memorial Herman Health System, MIAT (Michigan Institute of Aviation) College of Technology, Port of Houston, and HISD’s Technology Department. HISD principals coordinate ‘unconference’ for campus leaders to network, share best practices
Nearly 100 campus leaders from HISD, the greater Houston area, and across Texas gathered Monday at Bellaire High School to engage in a different kind of professional development.
A group of HISD principals and staff organized EdCamp Leadership Texas, a meeting of educational leaders from across Texas where they could ask questions, share insights, and network among peers they normally would not be able to connect with.
“All these leaders get to connect and get new resources,” said Sandra Menxueiro, principal at Farias Early Childhood Center and one of the organizers. “There’s a technology revolution in schools, and we want them to join. Join Twitter, join our (#HISDAdminChat on Twitter) and get connected to people and resources you wouldn’t otherwise. It starts with the leaders. This is about innovation and not being in silos.” read more…

Due to an inadvertent file transmission error, some employees may have received an incorrect payroll deposit on Monday. A 2014 direct deposit file was sent to the bank instead of the correct 2016 file. The issue was identified and quickly corrected on Monday; however, some bank deposits already had been processed.
All correct deposits will be processed by Wednesday, June 29, the district’s regular pay day.
Banks will begin the process of recovering the incorrect deposits. Many district employees were not affected and will receive the correct deposit on Wednesday, June 29.

Sharpstown High’s Nicanora Garza-Watson and T.H. Rogers Elementary’s Yan Cecilia Cheng recently were named co-teachers of the month by Chick-Fil-A and Telemundo.
Garza-Watson is an instructional specialist whose dedication goes beyond her students’ needs in the classroom. She routinely provides meals and snacks for students to ensure they don’t go hungry during the school day.
Cheng is a math teach at T.H. Rogers Elementary who almost always makes herself available to help students on her campus. She regularly uses her duty-free lunch period during past three years to tutor students to help with math and other subjects as well.
To recognize Garza-Watson and Cheng for their outstanding work, Chick-fil-A and Telemundo recently surprised them with a catered breakfast for their students and recognition during a Telemundo broadcast.
