In the 2015-2016 school year, the HISD Secondary Curriculum Department, in collaboration with teacher writers, began the development of digital, customizable, student-facing lessons that model best practices in content development, technology integration, literacy, and 21st century skills.  These resources were called Master Courses.    read more…

Herlinda Garcia awarded April’s Excellence in Leadership Award

After 49 years with HISD, most of which as J.P. Henderson Elementary principal, Herlinda Garcia is set to retire in August.

But before she leaves, the district chose to honor her with the April Excellence in Leadership Award to recognize her vision, leadership, and dedication to the students of HISD.

Garcia accepted the award at Wednesday’s Principals Meeting, during which she thanked former Superintendent Terry Grier for his leadership. She also commended Interim Superintendent Ken Huewitt for his inspiring speech at this year’s State of the Schools Luncheon, and said it helped her come to terms with her decision to retire because the district was in good hands. read more…

Reminder to complete dependent verification process for benefits

District employees who participate in any of the health benefit plans must provide official documentation in order to keep eligible dependent on their plan.

Employees must submit documentation for the verification process within 30 days of the date they add the dependent. They will receive a letter from ADP which details specific deadline dates.  read more…

District software upgrade giving students real-world experience

Student interns helping to launch OneSource  

_MG_0049Students from two HISD high schools are getting a hands-on and up-close look at one of the largest software upgrades in the district’s history. During the past four months, nearly a dozen juniors and seniors from Sam Houston and Scarborough high schools have been working side by side with members of Team HISD on the OneSource implementation project. OneSource is the name of a new districtwide system launching in July 2016 that will provide a seamless integration between human resources, payroll, finance, and logistics at HISD.   read more…

UPDATED: This year’s theme is HISD Superheroes. Buy your tickets today to honor your campus hero. 

HISD will honor the district’s teachers and principals of the year at a celebration on Friday, May 20, and this year’s event has a new name and venue.

“HISD Educators of the Year” will be held at Bayou City Events Center, located at 9401 Knight Road, 77046. Registration begins at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m.

Each campus is invited to purchase tickets for their campus Teacher of the Year and one guest, Beginning Teacher of the Year and one guest, as well as additional tickets for the campus/community teams who will attend to support campus honorees. Click here to download a ticket request form.

Interim Superintendent wants to know ‘What’s Important Around Here?’

These are just a few of the common themes popping up when Interim Superintendent Ken Huewitt poses the question, “What’s important around here?”

In an effort to give HISD leaders and employees another voice to provide their input, Huewitt recently went to Sharpstown High School and asked the campus community to give their thoughts. Their responses were captured in the first installment of a new video series.

The HISD Sugar Smasher Challenge is a four-week challenge to encourage employees to reduce their intake of “empty” calories.

“Empty” calories contain no vitamins, minerals, or nutrients. Most high-sugar foods and drinks provide “empty” calories. Healthier foods, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products, provide a more balanced diet. A diet without “empty” calories may help stabilize blood sugar for those at risk for or with diabetes. read more…
