Reflecting, recharging, and recommitting for 2019
Greetings and welcome to the first edition of the “Superintendent’s Spotlight,” a monthly e-newsletter where I will share important updates about the Houston Independent School District.
The holiday season is the perfect time to reflect, recharge, and recommit ourselves to our mission to serve our nearly 210,000 students and their families.
This month, you will learn about efforts underway to inform local elected officials about the district’s priorities going into the 2019 Texas Legislative Session, which begins on Jan. 8. You will also learn about a strategy called “Community of Practice” that we are using at our Achieve 180 schools to expand turnaround efforts at those underserved campuses. Additionally, do not miss the story about how a Wisdom High School parent is utilizing information gathered during HISD’s Parent University not only to support her daughter’s academic success, but also to boost the leadership of a new PTO at the school.
These efforts give me so much to be excited about as we approach a new year.
I look forward to sharing my strategic vision for HISD, as well as updates on major initiatives, when we return from the holidays. But in the meantime, please enjoy this special time of the year with your loved ones.
Remember, children come first in HISD. May you have a very peaceful and happy holiday season.
