HISD Board of Education elects new officers

District IX Trustee Wanda Adams named 2017 president

The HISD Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday to name District IX Trustee Wanda Adams president for 2017.

A Kashmere High School graduate, Adams was first elected to the school board in 2013. She previously served six years on the Houston City Council.

Other Board of Education officers for 2017 are Diana Dávila, first vice president; Jolanda Jones, second vice president; Rhonda Skillern-Jones, secretary; and Anne Sung, assistant secretary.

Earlier Thursday, two new trustees – Anne Sung and Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca (Ocampo) – were sworn into office.

Trustees thanked 2016 President Manuel Rodríguez Jr. for guiding the board through the successful search for new superintendent, which culminated with the hiring of Superintendent Richard Carranza.

“He led us through some turbulent times and hiring a new superintendent,” Adams said before she and her fellow trustees honored Rodríguez with a standing ovation.
